Thomas Nast invented the famous symbol—the Republican elephant. He used it in a cartoon that appeared in 1874, Nast drew a donkey (already associated with the Democratic party) clothed in lion's skin, scaring away all the animals at the zoo. One of those animals, the elephant, was labeled “The Republican Vote.” Since then, the elephant has been associated with the Republican Party.
